How I Treat Ear Infections at Home

How I Treat Ear Infections at Home

Why I Don’t Jump to Antibiotics for Ear Infections (And What I Do Instead)

Ear infections are one of the most common reasons kids are prescribed antibiotics. And if you’re a parent, you’ve probably been there. Your child is in pain, not sleeping, and you just want to fix it fast.

But here’s something a lot of parents aren’t told:

Antibiotics are often overused when it comes to ear infections.

And in many cases… they aren’t even necessary.

Not All Ear Infections Need Antibiotics

A big piece of this conversation comes down to understanding what’s actually causing the infection.

Many ear infections are viral, not bacterial.
And antibiotics? They only work on bacteria.

That means:

  • They won’t speed up healing for viral infections
  • They can disrupt gut health
  • And over time, overuse can contribute to antibiotic resistance

In a lot of cases, the body is fully capable of resolving the issue on its own—with the right support.

What I Do First at Home

When I notice early signs of ear discomfort in my child, I focus on supportive care first.

1. I Check the Ear (Yes, Really)

I use an otoscope to look inside the ear so I can actually see what’s going on.

This has been a game changer.

When you know what a healthy eardrum looks like versus an infected one, you’re not just guessing, you’re making informed decisions.

2. Garlic Oil Drops

Garlic oil is one of my go-to natural supports.

A few drops in the ear can help:

  • Support the body’s natural response
  • Provide gentle antimicrobial properties
  • Soothe irritation

(Always avoid using drops if you suspect a ruptured eardrum.)

3. Supporting Drainage + the Whole Body

Instead of just focusing on the ear, I look at the bigger picture.

Things I personally incorporate:

  • Homeopathic remedies
  • Herbal support
  • Addressing congestion and inflammation
  • Supporting the immune system overall

Because often, ear infections are connected to poor drainage, sinus congestion, or inflammation, not just the ear itself.

4. I Also Schedule a Chiropractor Visit

At the same time I’m supporting things at home, I’ll usually go ahead and schedule a chiropractor appointment.

Gentle adjustments can help support:

  • Proper drainage
  • Eustachian tube function
  • Overall alignment

5. Pain Relief When Needed

I’m not anti-medicine, I’m just intentional with it.

If the pain is:

  • Severe
  • Preventing sleep
  • Or clearly overwhelming

I’m personally okay using dye-free ibuprofen (like Motrin) for relief.

A Very Important Note

This approach is something I personally use when I catch symptoms early.

Do NOT use ear drops if there is a possibility of a ruptured eardrum.

And this is not medical advice, just sharing what I choose to do in my own home so other parents know they have options.
