How I Naturally Support a Fever as a Holistic RN

How I Naturally Support a Fever as a Holistic RN

A month or so ago, Zoe came down with a fever, and it reminded me just how many questions I get about how I approach fevers as a holistic RN.

One of the biggest things I want parents to understand is this:

I Don't Treat the Number—I Treat the Child.

A fever isn't the enemy.

It's one of the body's incredible built-in defense mechanisms and often plays an important role in helping fight off viruses and bacteria. Our bodies are beautifully designed and incredibly intelligent.

Because of that, I don't automatically reach for fever-reducing medication when I see a certain number on the thermometer. Instead, I pay close attention to how my child is actually doing.

What I Watch Instead

Rather than focusing only on temperature, I ask myself:

  • Is she drinking fluids?
  • Is she staying hydrated?
  • Is she alert and responsive?
  • Is she breathing comfortably?
  • Is she still interacting, resting, and waking appropriately?
  • Is she extremely uncomfortable or in obvious distress?

For me personally, I would consider lowering a fever if Zoe became dehydrated, was extremely uncomfortable, or wasn't acting like herself.

Thankfully, that hasn't happened.

Since Zoe was born (and she's almost 6!), I haven't needed to use medication for a fever. With the natural remedies I use to support her body, she's typically feeling like herself again within 24 hours or less.

Every child is different, and every illness is different, but this has been our experience.

My Favorite Natural Fever Supports

When a fever shows up, my goal isn't to "fight" the fever—it's to support my child's body while it does exactly what it was designed to do.

Here are some of the things I personally reach for:

A Few Important Thoughts:

This is not about judging parents who choose to use acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

There is absolutely a time and place for medication, and every child and every situation is unique.

If your child has a history of febrile seizures, has underlying medical conditions, develops concerning symptoms, or your parental instincts tell you something isn't right, please seek medical care and follow the guidance of your healthcare provider.

My goal is simply to share what has worked well for our family and explain why I personally feel comfortable allowing the body to do what it was designed to do.

Remember, a fever is only one piece of the picture.

Instead of focusing solely on the thermometer, pay attention to your child's overall condition:

  • Hydration
  • Breathing
  • Energy level
  • Alertness
  • Comfort
  • Behavior

Those things often tell you far more than a number ever could.

Our bodies are wonderfully designed to heal. Sometimes the best support we can offer is creating the right environment for that healing to happen.

If your child is an infant under 3 months with a fever, has difficulty breathing, shows signs of dehydration, is difficult to wake, has persistent high fever, or you have any concerns, seek medical evaluation promptly.
