Best Clean Hair Care Products | Shampoo, Hair Loss + Hair Dye Swaps

Your hair care routine is something you use constantly.

So if you’re trying to clean up your personal care products, your hair products are a great place to start.

From shampoo and conditioner to hairspray, hair-growth products, and even hair dye, there are plenty of products on the market with ingredients I personally prefer to avoid.

That doesn’t mean you need to throw out everything in your bathroom overnight. I’m all about making better swaps when you can and finding products that actually work for your hair.

Here are some of my favorite cleaner hair care swaps and the ingredients I look for when shopping.

Shampoo + Conditioner

Let’s start with the basics.

Shampoo and conditioner are some of the products we use most frequently, and conventional formulas can contain ingredients like synthetic fragrance, sulfates, parabens, and other preservatives or additives that I personally prefer to skip.

What I Look For in Shampoo + Conditioner

Fragrance

“Fragrance” can be used as a general term on a cosmetic ingredient label rather than listing every individual fragrance component. If I’m looking for a cleaner formula, I prefer products with simpler ingredient lists and little or no synthetic fragrance.

Sulfates

Sulfates are cleansing agents commonly used in shampoos. They can be effective at removing oil and buildup, but some people find them drying or irritating, especially if they have a dry or sensitive scalp.

Parabens

Parabens are preservatives used in cosmetics to help prevent microbial growth. They’re an ingredient I personally prefer to avoid when there are other options available.

Preservatives + Unnecessary Additives

Preservatives serve an important purpose in products that contain water, so “preservative-free” isn't necessarily the goal. I’m more interested in avoiding unnecessary additives and choosing formulas with ingredients I actually recognize and feel good about using.

Hair Loss + Hair Growth Support

Hair loss is something a LOT of people experience, and it can happen for many different reasons.

Postpartum changes, stress, illness, rapid weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid issues, hormonal changes, genetics, and certain medications can all play a role in shedding or hair loss.

And this is where I think it’s important to look beyond the bottle of shampoo.

If you're suddenly losing a significant amount of hair, have bald patches, or your shedding is persistent or concerning, it's worth talking with a healthcare professional rather than assuming you simply need a better hair product.

Depending on the situation, evaluation may include looking at things like nutrient deficiencies, thyroid or hormone issues, scalp conditions, medications, or other underlying causes.

Start With the Foundation

Before buying every hair-growth product on the internet, I like to think about the basics:

Nutrition
Hair growth requires adequate nutrition, including enough protein and key nutrients.

Iron + Other Nutrients
Deficiencies can contribute to hair shedding, so testing can be more useful than blindly taking a bunch of supplements.

Hormones + Thyroid
If your hair is changing significantly, these can be worth discussing with your healthcare provider.

Scalp Health
Your scalp is where the hair-growth process starts, so taking care of it matters.

Stress + Recovery
Major physical or emotional stress can also contribute to increased shedding.

My Favorite Hair Loss + Hair Growth Support

Rowe Casa Organics
Their hormone kit and hair spritz are options to look into.

CurrentBody
Their red-light hair-growth helmet is one of the options I keep on my list.

Armra
Colostrum is another product to consider as part of an overall wellness routine.

Just Ingredients
Their Hair, Skin & Nails, collagen, and hair serum are options for supporting a hair-care routine.

Lumebox
A red-light therapy device that can be used as part of a broader wellness routine.

Bon Charge
Their red-light cap is another option for those interested in light-based hair support.

Zuma
Their Grow Serum is a topical option.

HigherDOSE
Their red-light cap is another option to look into.

Innersense
Their Hair Renew Daily Active Serum is designed specifically for scalp and hair support.

Heart & Soil
Their Skin Hair Nails supplement is another option.

Plant Therapy
Their Rosemary & Castor Hair Oil and Rosemary & Water Daily Hair Spray are both worth looking at.

Queens of Thrones
Their Organic Golden Castor Oil is another simple topical option.

Organic Olivia
Their Mane Magic Hair Tonic is designed for scalp and hair support.

Amazing Hair Savior
A natural hair oil option.

Sky Organics
Their Organic Rosemary Strong Roots Oil is another option for scalp care.

Earthley
Their leave-in conditioner and rosemary-lavender shampoo bar can fit into a cleaner hair routine.

Kettle & Fire
Bone broth can be incorporated as part of an overall nutrient-dense diet.

Global Healing
Their plant-based biotin is another supplement option.

The Biggest Hair-Loss Takeaway

If you’re experiencing hair loss, don't automatically assume you need a better shampoo.

Ask yourself:

What changed?

Did you recently have a baby? Get sick? Experience major stress? Change your diet? Lose weight? Stop or start medication? Notice other hormone or thyroid changes?

Sometimes the most helpful step isn't another product. It's figuring out what may be contributing to the change.

Hair Dye

Hair dye is another category where I pay close attention to ingredients.

You don't necessarily have to stop coloring your hair completely. There are just options that use different formulations, and I prefer to choose products without some of the ingredients commonly found in conventional hair dyes.

Ingredients I Look For

Some of the ingredients I personally try to avoid in hair dye include:

  • Ammonia
  • Parabens
  • Phthalates
  • Resorcinol
  • Heavy metals
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Artificial fragrance
  • PPD (para-phenylenediamine)

One ingredient I pay particular attention to is PPD, which is a common hair-dye allergen. Hair-dye reactions can happen even if you've used the same product before without a problem, which is why following the product's patch-testing instructions matters.

My Favorite Hair Dye Swaps

Desert Shadow

Indus Valley

Tints of Nature

Cultivators

Naturtint

Herbatint

Aromaganic

Naturigin

Light Mountain

Radico

Jiva Organics

EcoColors

These are the options I would look at when I'm trying to find a hair-coloring product with a different ingredient profile from conventional permanent dyes.

And regardless of which product you choose, always follow the manufacturer's directions and patch-test as instructed.

My Hair Care Favorites

You don't need to replace your entire bathroom cabinet overnight.

Start with the products you use the most.

Maybe that's your shampoo. Maybe it's your hairspray. Maybe you're dealing with postpartum shedding and want to focus on scalp care. Or maybe you're ready to switch your hair dye.

Small swaps add up.

And just like everything else, there is no such thing as a completely perfect product. I look at the ingredients, consider what I'm trying to avoid, and choose the option that makes the most sense for me and my family.

Final Thoughts

Hair care is one of those areas where you can make a LOT of swaps without completely changing your routine.

Start by looking at the products you use most often.

Choose simpler formulas when you can.

Pay attention to fragrance and other ingredients you personally want to avoid.

And if you're dealing with hair loss, don't stop at changing your shampoo. Look at the bigger picture and consider whether something else may be contributing to the change.

Cleaner hair care doesn't have to mean complicated hair care.

It's just about making better swaps when you can.
