Best Clean Deodorants: What to Look For + My Favorite Brands
Share
If there’s one personal-care product most of us use every single day, it’s deodorant.
And because you’re applying it directly to your skin every day, I think it’s worth paying attention to what’s actually inside the products we use.
There are SO many deodorants and antiperspirants on store shelves, and the ingredient lists can be surprisingly long.
So if you’re trying to make cleaner swaps in your personal care routine, deodorant is an easy place to start.
As a holistic RN, these are the ingredients I personally look for, and the deodorants I would buy.
Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant: What's the Difference?
First, let's clear up something that gets confusing.
Deodorant and antiperspirant aren't the same thing.
Deodorant is designed primarily to help control body odor.
Antiperspirants are designed to reduce sweating, typically by using aluminum-based active ingredients that temporarily block sweat glands.
That means when I'm looking for a cleaner deodorant, I'm generally looking for a product that helps with odor without relying on aluminum-based antiperspirant ingredients.
And yes, you will probably sweat more when you make the switch.
That's normal.
Sweating is a normal and important function of the body. The goal of deodorant isn't necessarily to stop you from sweating. It's to help manage odor.
What I Look For in a Deodorant
I don't expect every product to be perfect, and "natural" doesn't automatically mean better or safer.
But when I'm choosing personal-care products, I like to keep the ingredient list as simple as possible.
Here are some of the things I personally look for:
Aluminum-Free
If I'm buying a deodorant rather than an antiperspirant, I prefer one without aluminum-based antiperspirant ingredients.
It's important to note that there isn't good evidence showing that aluminum-containing antiperspirants cause breast cancer. My choice to use aluminum-free deodorant is about my personal approach to reducing ingredients I don't feel I need in my everyday routine.
Fragrance
"Fragrance" can be a broad labeling term for a mixture of fragrance ingredients. The FDA allows fragrance ingredients in cosmetics to be listed collectively as "fragrance" in many circumstances.
Some people also experience skin irritation or sensitivity from fragrance ingredients.
For that reason, I prefer products where I can clearly understand what's providing the scent or products that are fragrance-free.
Parabens
Parabens are preservatives used in some cosmetics and personal-care products.
They've received a lot of attention because some parabens can have weak estrogen-like activity in laboratory studies. Current evidence does not establish that parabens in cosmetics cause cancer, but they're an ingredient many people choose to avoid.
Phthalates
Phthalates are a group of chemicals used in a variety of products, including some fragrance applications.
If I'm trying to simplify my personal-care routine, I prefer brands that are transparent about their ingredients and don't rely on unnecessary fragrance ingredients.
Dyes
I personally don't see a reason for deodorant to need artificial coloring.
If I'm choosing between two products and one has a simple ingredient list without unnecessary dyes, that's the direction I'll go.
PEGs, Triclosan & Other Ingredients I Prefer to Skip
Depending on the product and formulation, you may also see ingredients like PEG compounds, triclosan, or other ingredients you may personally prefer to avoid.
This is where I think reading the entire ingredient list matters more than simply looking for a "natural" or "clean" label.
"Natural" isn't a standardized safety guarantee, and the FDA does not formally define "natural" for cosmetics.
My Favorite Clean Deodorant Swaps
These are some of the deodorants I would personally consider when looking for a cleaner option.
And one important reminder: clean deodorant is not one-size-fits-all.
What works for one person may not work for another, especially when it comes to odor control, sensitivity, and baking soda.
Primally Pure
Primally Pure is one of the brands I come back to for natural deodorant.
They have several scent options, and their deodorants are a popular choice for people looking to move away from conventional antiperspirants.
Just Ingredients
Just Ingredients makes a variety of personal-care products, including their magnesium deodorant.
I love that this is another option for someone who wants a simple deodorant without making the switch feel complicated.
Rowe Casa Organics
Rowe Casa's deodorant is another option I would consider if you're looking for a natural deodorant.
They offer different scents, including vanilla + mint.
Agent Nateur
Agent Nateur is another clean personal-care brand to know about.
Their deodorant is a good option if you're looking for something that feels a little more elevated while still keeping your routine simple.
Attitude Living
Attitude has a wide range of personal-care products, and their Super Leaves deodorant is another option to consider.
I especially like having options for people who want a more accessible clean-personal-care swap.
Earth Mama
Earth Mama's Simply Non-Scents deodorant is a great option for anyone who prefers to skip added fragrance.
This is one I would especially look at if you have sensitive skin or don't want a scented deodorant.
Earthley
Earthley's Mineral Deodorant Plus is another option on my list.
They offer an unscented version, which is always nice to have when you're trying to keep your personal-care routine simple.
Rustic Maka
Rustic Maka makes natural deodorants with different scent options.
If you have tried natural deodorants before and haven't found one that works for you, this is another brand worth checking out.
Cleo + Coco
Cleo + Coco makes natural deodorants with options designed around different preferences, including sensitive-skin-friendly formulas.
It's another option to consider if you're looking for a simple aluminum-free swap.
PapaBear Naturals
PapaBear Naturals makes natural deodorant options with organic ingredients and aluminum-free formulas.
It's another brand I would put on the list when you're looking for alternatives to conventional deodorant.
Toup & Co
Toup & Co makes natural deodorant options with different essential-oil-based scents.
Their deodorant is another option for someone who wants to move away from conventional antiperspirants.
Organic Jaguar
Organic Jaguar is another natural deodorant option that makes my list.
Their original deodorant uses a baking-soda-based formula and is aluminum-free.
Each & Every
Each & Every makes aluminum-free deodorants in a variety of scents.
If you prefer something that feels more like a traditional deodorant stick, this is one to check out.
Wellnesse
Wellnesse makes a mineral deodorant designed to help control odor without aluminum.
They have different scent options, including Aloe + Driftwood.
Ursa Major
Ursa Major's Forest Alchemy deodorant is another option for anyone looking for an aluminum-free deodorant.
Their formulas are designed with plant-based ingredients and a more earthy scent profile.
Pit Liquor
And then there's Pit Liquor.
It's a natural deodorant spray, which makes it a little different from the traditional stick deodorants on this list.
If sticks aren't your thing, this is a fun option to try.
A Note About the "Detox" Phase
If you've been using conventional antiperspirant for years and switch to natural deodorant, you may hear people talk about an "armpit detox."
I wouldn't get too caught up in that terminology.
Your body doesn't need a special detox treatment because you stopped using antiperspirant.
What can happen is that your skin and your deodorant routine may take some time to adjust.
You may notice more sweating.
You may notice more odor.
And you may need to experiment with different formulas before finding one that works for you.
That's completely normal.
Natural Deodorant Doesn't Work for Everyone the Same Way
This is probably the biggest thing I want you to know.
Don't assume that because one natural deodorant didn't work for you, natural deodorant doesn't work.
Your body chemistry plays a huge role in which one you'll like.
If you try one and it gives you a rash, burns, or irritates your skin, stop using it. Even naturally derived ingredients can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people.

Final Thoughts
You don't have to throw out every product in your bathroom overnight.
That's not how I approach non-toxic living.
Instead, I like to look at the products I use every single day and slowly replace them with options that better fit my personal preferences.
Deodorant is an easy place to start.
Find a formula you like.
Read the ingredients.
Pay attention to how your skin responds and don't be afraid to try a few different brands before you find your favorite.
